Today, let us talk about the top dental problems; these problems are not only most common but these problems that are mostly preventable and the problems that require you to visit your dentist.
Most of the times, it is our negligence that leads to an escalation of the treatment costs. Treating problems at a very nascent stage is an easy task when compared to treating it later on.
- Dental Caries:
Dental caries is known to the common man as tooth decay. Tooth decay occurs when the bacteria feed on the sticky substance called plaque, that has been built upon your teeth, containing sugars and/starches of the food you eat. This process slowly destroys the enamel by producing acids and leads to cavitations.

- TOOTH SENSITIVITY:
Tooth sensitivity is a very common problem and it has been estimated that approximately half the population experiences it. It is usually caused by dentin in root areas exposed to the oral cavity due to receding gums or periodontal disease.

Basically, tooth sensitivity involves experiencing a sharp excruciating pain or shock to your teeth from sweets, cold air, hot drinks, cold drinks or ice-cream. Some people also experience discomfort from brushing and flossing. It can also be a sign of decay with a cavity or hole in the tooth or a sign of a broken tooth.
Prevention: You can reduce chances of getting sensitivity by maintaining good oral hygiene, brushing and flossing properly and using some desensitizing toothpaste recommended by your dentist.
- Halitosis:
Halitosis is generally known as Bad breath. It can result from poor dental; health habits and may be a sign of other health problems and some of the foods. The main cause of persistent bad breath is poor dental health. Gum diseases, cavities, oral cancer, dry mouth and bacteria on the tongue are some of the dental problems that can cause halitosis.

Mouthwashes used to cover up bad breath. Brushing teeth and tongue after eating, flossing at least once a day and replacing toothbrushes regularly may improve bad breath.
Prevention: Avoiding foods known to cause bad breath may also help. If you have chronic bad breath, visit your dentist to rule out any of the problems.
- GUM DISEASE:
Gum Disease is also known as periodontal disease. It is an infection of the gums surrounding the teeth. If the gum disease left untreated, it can cause bone loss and your teeth might shift or become loose.

Gum disease usually occurs after the age of 30. Some of the risk factors are smoking, Diabetes, dry mouth that causes gums red, swollen, tender or bleeding gums.
Prevention: Regular dental check-ups along with brushing at-least twice a day and flossing help in preventing gum disease.
- MOUTH SORE:
The exact cause of mouth sores is unknown. These are painful areas in mouth and gums. Common mouth sores are canker sores and aphthous ulcers. Unless a mouth sore lasts more than two weeks, it is mostly harmless, but extremely uncomfortable while eating, drinking and brushing their teeth and will disappear on its own.

Herpes simplex virus causes fever blisters / cold sores and they are contagious. Mouth sores also seen in oral thrush or candidacies, denture wearers, people with diabetes and during cancer treatment.
Prevention: For more painful or frequent recurrence of mouth ulcers, the dentist may prescribe an anti-microbial mouthwash or ointment to reduce swelling and reduces pain.
- STAINED TEETH:
Stained teeth also known as Tooth Discoloration. Foods, medication, tobacco, and trauma can discolor your teeth.
Prevention: The stains can removed by using a whitening agent and a special light or bleaching at home or using whitening toothpaste, rinses depending on the nature of the discoloration.
- ORAL CANCER:
Oral cancer is a serious and deadly disease that affects millions of people. It is most often seen in people over the age of 40. The risk factors of oral cancer are tobacco, alcohol use, chewing tobacco and HPV increases the risk.

The symptoms include sores, lumps or rough areas in the mouth. Sometimes, these lumps can also palpated with hand. Also, in some situations, consolidation of the lymphatic nodes can take place. They become palpable, tender and swollen in the neck.
Prevention: If you notice any of the symptoms or have trouble chewing, swallowing or moving your tongue or jaw, see your dentist. Regular dental visits can help in early diagnosis and prompt treatment of oral cancer.
- TOOTH EROSION:
Tooth erosion is the loss of tooth structure chemically and it is usually caused by acid attacking the enamel. The signs and symptoms can range from sensitivity to more severe problems such as cracking. It is more common in people with habituated use of carbonated drinks.
Prevention: People with Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disorder (GERD) might as well lead to erosion of the enamel because of the acidic contents of the digestive juices. This can be prevented by taking some precautions.
- TOOTHACHES AND DENTAL EMERGENCIES:
Toothaches can easily avoided by regular visits to the dentist. Common dental emergencies are broken or cracked tooth, an abscessed tooth, or a tooth knocked out in an accident. If you have a fractured or dislocated jaw or severe cuts to your tongue, lips, or mouth you need to visit and dental specialist or at least a doctor immediately.
Prevention: If you have a tooth abscess that is causing difficulty swallowing or you have developed a fever or facial swelling, get emergency care as well.
- UNATTRACTIVE SMILE:
An unattractive smile can really lower a person’s self-esteem. Though it is not technically a “dental problem,” it is a major reason why many patients seek dental treatment.
